What drives demand in Charlestown

Charlestown ranks ninth in demand, reflecting a more moderate, residential market than the top-tier neighborhoods. One of Boston’s oldest neighborhoods, it offers historic charm, harborside views, and a quieter, community-oriented atmosphere that appeals to renters looking for calm over intensity.

Access is solid without being central: the Orange Line at Community College, bus connections, and ferry service give Charlestown reasonable links to downtown, though it is somewhat more separated than the Red Line neighborhoods that top the rankings. That relative separation, combined with its residential character, keeps demand steady rather than frantic.

For renters, Charlestown is a good fit if you value a settled, historic neighborhood with water access and are willing to trade some of the central connectivity of pricier areas. Competition exists but is more manageable than in the value zone.

B-NDI demand scores and rent figures are Q2 2026 baseline estimates from public data sources (US Census ACS, Zillow, Massachusetts Association of Realtors, MBTA). Studio and 2BR figures are estimates derived from typical Boston ratios. Independent vacancy and days-on-market data attributed to Boston Pads. Homzora’s Q3 2026 renter survey did not reach the minimum sample for a survey validated demand release; see the Q3 2026 status report.
