Moving between cities: what changes about your rights as a renter

Six cities, thirty directional pairs. Each of these guides sets out what actually changes about your rights as a renter when you move between two of the cities Homzora covers, using figures from our published open datasets rather than from summaries.

We write these by pair and by direction, because the two are not the same article. Moving from Boston to Atlanta means giving up deposit interest and a thirty day grace period on late rent. Moving from Atlanta to Boston means gaining both and losing a month of notice. The protections you leave behind are the ones worth knowing about before you sign.

Published guides

Moving from Boston to Atlanta
Your deposit cap doubles, the interest your landlord owed you disappears, and a rule that arrived in Georgia in 2024 gives you three business days instead of fourteen when rent is late.

Moving from New York to Miami
The one month deposit cap disappears entirely, the fourteen day return becomes fifteen or thirty, and the rent demand drops from fourteen days to three.

Moving from Chicago to Miami
A long standing Chicago tenant trades 120 days of notice for thirty, deposit interest stops, and the ten day cure right becomes a three day notice.

Moving from New York to Atlanta
The deposit cap doubles from one month to two, the fourteen day return becomes thirty, landlord notice improves to a flat sixty days, and the rent demand drops from fourteen days to three business days.

The pairs below are published in order of how many people actually make the move. A pair without a link has not been written yet, and we would rather show you the gap than link to a page that does not exist.

What these guides will not tell you

We do not put one city rent figure next to another and call the difference a saving. Our rent data does not meet the same standard in every city, and subtracting a single source average from a three source average produces a number that looks authoritative and is not. Where a city dataset does not publish a figure, the guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Everything these guides do state comes from statute, from published municipal rules, or from a Homzora dataset you can download and check.

The data behind every guide

The cross city statutory comparison covering all six cities is published as CSV or JSON, under CC BY 4.0. Where a cell is empty it means we have not verified it, not that the city has no rule.
