    "dataset": "Homzora New York MTA Fares 2026",
    "city": "New York City",
    "period": "2026, effective 4 January",
    "basis": "Fare schedule adopted by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board, taken from the MTA published fare change materials. Primary source.",
    "the_headline": "New York no longer has a monthly transit pass. The 30 day unlimited MetroCard was withdrawn in January 2026 along with the 7 day and Express Bus Plus unlimited products, replaced by an automatic rolling seven day fare cap.",
    "how_the_cap_works": "Tap the same card or phone for every journey. The first twelve rides in any rolling seven day period are charged at 3.00 each. Every ride after that is free until the seven days elapse. Nothing is purchased in advance and nothing expires.",
    "what_this_means_for_a_monthly_budget": "A regular commuter hitting the cap every week spends 35.00 a week, which works out near 150 dollars over a typical month. That is more than any other city Homzora covers: Miami is 112.50 for a monthly pass, Atlanta 95 and Chicago 75. Someone travelling less than twelve times a week pays only for the rides taken, which suits irregular or hybrid patterns better than a monthly pass did.",
    "documented_disagreement": "Two published news sources report the seven day cap as 36 dollars. The MTA own fare change materials state 35.00, as do several other reports of the board decision. Homzora publishes 35.00 on the authority of the MTA document and records the disagreement here.",
    "beyond_the_subway": "Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North weekly and monthly tickets increased by 4.5 percent in the same package. NICE buses on Long Island and Bee-Line in Westchester aligned their base fares to 3.00. Those systems are outside this dataset.",
